PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification Schemes) is a label which certifies that wood comes from forests that are managed sustainably and which advocates environmentally friendly forest management, which is socially favourable and economically viable. Started in 1999 on the initiative of 12 European countries, PEFC has currently become the most important certification system in the world since it brings together more than 224 millions hectares of certified forests, while involving all stakeholders in the forestry sector (landowners, industries, users, etc.).
As a consumer, you can play a role in forestry protection, buying PEFC products, which guarantees that the wood comes from properly-manage forests and has been produced and processed with the same ethical concern.
